Opening Essence
Woodstove Chai is a hug of spice and a blanket of warmth. Malty Assam black tea is blended with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, clove, star anise, allspice, coriander and a gentle kick of black pepper, making a bold, aromatic cup for cold Canadian mornings. Brew it strong, add milk and honey, and let the cold wait outside.
The Story
Chai simply means “tea” in Hindi, a word that travelled along trade routes from the Chinese cha. What many of us call “chai” is more fully masala chai, or spiced tea, and it’s woven into daily life across India.
Spiced and herbal drinks have a long history in the region. Black tea became part of the tradition later, after large tea gardens were established in Assam in the 1800s. Over the following century, tea brewed with milk, sugar and a family’s own mix of spices became a beloved everyday ritual. It was poured from street-side stalls, shared with guests, and simmered in home kitchens, with every household and vendor keeping their own recipe.
Woodstove Chai honours that tradition with a nod to where we brew it: a northern kitchen, a kettle on the stove, and frost on the window.
Traditional Herbal Perspective
For generations, the spices in this blend have been prized in kitchens around the world for their aroma and warmth. In Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of medicine, cinnamon, ginger, clove and black pepper are often described as warming spices, and they have long been combined in seasonal drinks during the cooler months. Cardamom and star anise bring sweetness and fragrance, while coriander and allspice round out the blend.
We share this as cultural history, a glimpse into how these ingredients have been enjoyed and understood over time, rather than as a promise of any particular effect.
Closing reflection
Some rituals ask us to slow down. Others gently prepare us for what’s ahead. Woodstove Chai does a little of both. It’s a pause by the stove before the boots go on, a warm cup held close while the day is still quiet. At Sip Ritual, we believe the smallest moments can carry us the furthest.
Pause here. Warm through. Venture out.
